Fish oil supplements?

0

I would like to increase my family’s consumption of essential fatty acids (EFAs). What fish oil supplements can you recommend? Any tips on no-fuss ways to help my kids eat them? I have a six-year old, a four-year old, and a 17-month old.

The only fish oil supplement I recommend is the fermented cod liver oil from Green Pastures.  The reason for this is that they test and reveal exactly how much Vitamins A & D are in them, which ensures that you get the correct vitamin A to vitamin D ratio.  The Green Pastures Fermented CLO will easily provide the recommended daily dose of vitamin A and vitamin D, unlike most brands which go through a process that leaves them with have very low vitamin A and almost no vitamin D at the end.

Daily recommended vitamin D: 500-1000 IU vitamin D for children, 1000-2000 IU vitamin D for adults, 2000-4000 IU vitamin D for pregnant and nursing women

Brands WAPF recommends:

BEST (Available Online/Mail Order):

  • Green Pasture Products: Blue Ice High-Vitamin Fermented Cod Liver Oil
  • Dr. Ron’s Ultra-Pure: Blue Ice High-Vitamin Fermented Cod Liver Oil
  • Radiant Life: Blue Ice High-Vitamin Fermented Cod Liver Oil
  • Natural Health Advocates: Blue Ice High-Vitamin Fermented Cod Liver Oil

GOOD (and available in Stores):

  • Carlson soft gel Cod Liver Oil Super 1,000 mg capsules
  • NOW double strength Cod Liver Oil capsules
  • Sonne’s Cod Liver Oil
  • Swanson double strength Cod Liver Oil capsules
  • Twin Labs non-emulsified liquid Cod Liver Oil

Obviously, if you spend a good deal of time outside in the sunshine (many hours a day), you wouldn’t want to take this supplement.

My kids are similar in age to yours. Many people have had success getting their kids to eat the peppermint emulsified CLO, but I have not tried it. We use the regular Arctic Mint flavored CLO. We all just drink it (or shoot it for us adults) right off the spoon with a nice honey sweetened cup of warm raw milk as a chaser. There was struggle at first, but now it’s just what we do and is part of the routine.

Here are some suggestions from the Facebook page:

If you can’t get them to take Fish Oil, perhaps Flax Oil would be more acceptable to them. It has the same Omegas as Fish Oil and can be hidden in their food with very little, if any taste.
